Sustainability on Campus

Written by Amanda Damon

Alfred State College President Skip Sullivan recently addressed the uptick in disposable plastics used on campus is addressed.  “Prior to COVID-19 our campus made many strides in adjusting dining services for sustainability. Unfortunately with our new reliance on to go packaging, we do need to utilize containers and bags much more frequently now.” Even though there is more need for single use objects, there are still ways that the college can limit waste. One aspect that can be changed is the plastic bags that are handed out at the Terrace. These bags are given to students regardless of whether they plan to use them. I have personally seen an obscene number of bags simply thrown away, creating an abundance of needless waste. There are areas where waste is unavoidable, though this is one that can be fixed.

While the college does have to rely more on plastic utensils and bags, there are many ways that students can help reduce waste. Buying reusable items, such as straws and bags, can help limit the waste of single use objects that end up in landfills. Also, plastic bottles are often used and thrown out instead of being recycled. Many students prefer drinking bottled water because of the poor taste of Alfred’s water; however, by using a Brita water bottle, students can utilize campus bottle filling stations while helping the environment.  Students can also be more aware of what can be recycled rather than just thrown out. By holding ourselves accountable for what is thrown away and recycled, we can create a greener world.
