Covid-19 Impact on Alfred State Admissions

Written by Amanda Damon

In a time when nothing seemed certain, college students faced a difficult choice. New students had to decide if this year was the right time to attend college or if, for the sake of their health, it was best to delay that decision. Returning students had to choose between returning to campus and trying to take all online classes from home. These decisions would ultimately have an impact on schools all across the country, and it seems that many colleges are seeing a decrease in admissions.

Enrollment at Alfred State is down about 3.5%, though numbers are still currently speculative. “Our incoming student numbers (new and transfer) have dropped a bit compared to last year, especially students from the New York City area” (Betsy Penrose, Vice President for Enrollment Management).

Covid-19 also forced Alfred State admissions to adapt. Penrose said that the college has had to transition to  offers virtual chats, visits, tours, overviews, and open houses online. Large events, such as in-person visits and college fairs, will be held virtually for the foreseeable future. Employees in the admissions office have adjusted well to the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic and continue to connect with incoming and prospective students. The health of the college depends on its ability to expand and adapt its virtual interactions with students.
