The United States (U.S.) is not fulfilling that goal. Although the U.S. is esteemed for their educational institutions across the nation, recently, it has become apparent that the nation’s educational system is failing students for preparation in the marketplace. Notable individuals like Kieron Sweeney, has addressed this pressing issue facing Americans today in his TED Talk titled, “Financial illiteracy in the school curriculum”. Sweeney has been in the entrepreneurial field for 30 years and has helped other entrepreneurs save their businesses and increase their wealth through innovative marketing techniques and has publicly spoken in regard to increasing wealth across many different countries. In his presentation, he discusses the consequences, both to the individual and to the country, surrounding the lack of education in finance. Sweeney underlines the key notion that financial principles are not taught in public education and the financial burdens that most of the population are facing are clear evidence that there needs to be a change. Sweeney is a successful businessman who aims to see parents and children begin creating a better financial future for themselves and introduces his simple solutions to begin learning financial literacy. The striking statistics of how many people are struggling with their finances is a catastrophic issue that will only be resolved with the movement to include financial education to the public, and Sweeney presents one solution that could help in achieving a better educated populous.

Due to public education failing to reach this critical aspect of education in the core curriculum most of the population is living paycheck to paycheck with little to no knowledge regarding their finances and its impact is evident in our current economy. As young adults, it is a great dishonor to never be taught how to manage our finances or what decisions will financially stunt us before being acclimated into the workforce. The age group of teens to young adults has influential buying power ranging from personal purchases to loans yet they have the smallest experience and education when it comes to finances. To have great access to a variety of payment options, education in how these monetary decisions will impact you are substantially important to one’s success especially for young people. Therefore, until the time comes where this vital piece of a well-rounded education is incorporated into public education, it is important to navigate online educational platforms, like that of Kieron Sweeney’s and educate ourselves so that we will not repeat the pattern of financial instability.

Kieron Sweeney is an entrepreneur that has trained business owners on five continents and is recognized as an inspirational keynote speaker, author, and mentor. In his Talk, he discusses his journey of making his money work best for him. Like many people, Sweeney excelled at his job and provided his main source of income. However, at the age of 31, he was forced to start over and move in with his parents. Hence, Sweeney recognizes the financial struggle that most people battle with in handling their finances because he, himself has lived through it. Fortunately, he met a mentor that helped him out of a financial hole and sent him on his way to financial security and to where he is today. Describing his own struggles and personal experiences to gain the trust of his audience is an example of employing ethos. In his presentation the connection that he builds with the crowd through sharing the obstacles he has overcome and lessons he learned formed a network of trust among the audience. This in turn, will help people actively listen to his message and ultimately act on the message he’s presenting.

Sweeney describes his past experiences to gain the audience’s trust, however, he furthers a connection to the audience by appealing to their emotions. He explains to the audience that he too is a father and wants the very best for his children and for them to never suffer the fate of financial instability. This strategy targets the large majority of the room and introduces a shared goal among himself and his audience. Sweeney utilizes pathos in his speech by describing the heartache that is attached to lacking a financial education for their children’s sake and joins the crowd in yearning for their future success. Additionally, he touches upon the fact that parents are their child’s first teacher and practicing good financial habits will positively impact themselves as well as their children. He notes that it is a parent’s responsibility to educate their children in such areas that public education fails in doing so. Therefore, by equating himself to the crowd and informing them of the importance of educating their children in areas that are neglected, Sweeney prompts his audience to listen to his recommendations and act on it.

Moreover, Sweeney introduces an abundance of facts and information to fortify the severity of this issue. As previously discussed, Sweeney is an established entrepreneur that has mentored those in the business world globally and has witnessed this particular struggle across multiple continents. People do not know how to manage money and the cause of this is that people typically are never taught simple financial management principles. The statistics that he presents make known that this is a glaring issue for most of the population. For instance, less than 20% of the population will retire financially secure; the average person will have $6,200 in assets when they die; and the comparison of credit card debt in America which is 8.25 billion dollars to the student loan debt which is 1.3 trillion dollars and finally, the global government debt which is 62 trillion dollars (all of which are subject to change due to time). Sweeney argues that as a society, we debt finance everything which results in most individuals struggling with their personal finances and retiring with little to nothing to survive on. He highlights that this is a global issue that will impact generations to follow and the cycle of being a slave to money will continue if educating the youth in financial principles does not ensue.

By the end of Sweeney’s TED Talk, he introduces the goal that he aims to achieve: to create an influential movement through an online platform that he created to educate youth on money management principles and provide the opportunity for people to take charge of their financial future. He subtly gains his audience’s trust by providing his credibility in finances, relating to them through shared experiences; fears; and goals, as well as turning their focus on the stark statistics facing people today in the economy. Sweeney strategically established trust among the crowd using these methods so that the audience can consider the solution that Sweeney was offering. By introducing his solution at the end of his Talk, he allowed time for a relationship to build between himself and the audience so that when he detailed his solution, the audience is more prone to accept and practice these financial habits. He then concluded with a challenge to all the parents in the room: to teach their children the foundational concepts of money management and ensure that their future is financially secure.

The financial burdens that most Americans face is prominent from the state of the economy, the level of stress, and even the quality of their overall health. Sweeney does an excellent job of describing the severity surrounding this problem and attracting his audience’s attention. Although his solution is small and has a purpose of gaining more people to use his personal platform, it is a start to educating more people in this subject and will help others thrive financially and personally.

"Financial illiteracy in the school curriculum." It is vital to our current culture to acknowledge and respect Indigenous perspectives. On holidays like Columbus Day and Thanksgiving it is even more imperative that we pay respects to these perspectives. These holidays should be used as educational opportunities of Indigenous studies.

Stereotypes of these holidays often perpetuate racism and harmful lies. Learning the real history behind these holidays will allow for the true Indigenous culture to be honored. Indigenous people showed generosity to Europeans and was met with genocide. On these holidays it is imperative that we acknowledge this. We celebrate these holidays without understanding what really took place and actually acknowledging what truly happened. Teaching younger generations the true history of Columbus Day and Thanksgiving will allow for them to grow up with a newfound feeling towards indigenous people. They will grow up knowing that these holidays are days meant for learning and teaching others about these cultures. They will be able to understand the true importance of these holidays and will be able to pass this knowledge down to future generations. For many years, Indigenous people were silenced and their stories were marginalized. On top of this many tribes were stripped of their lands and forced to relocate. This is the reason why it is important to learn the true histories and celebrate indigenous perspectives. Celebrating these holidays without Indigenous perspective is inconsiderate and cruel. These days should be made to honor Indigenous people and their cultures.

While learning history is important, it is not the only thing to be done. Listening to Indigenous voices today about their concerns and opinions is an important way to honor the culture. It will show how the wrongdoings of the past have impacted those of the future. Newer generations have a better understanding of things like oppression and racism and they will be able to put these complex feelings and/or thoughts together to explain to peers how their culture should be honored and remembered. As a people, it is our duty to help support the indigenous community. We should be doing a multitude of things such as supporting their businesses, listening to their concerns, acknowledging the proper history and so much more.

Research to support my claims can be found in an article titled “Rethinking Thanksgiving Celebrations: Native Perspectives on Thanksgiving” published by the National Museum of the American Indian. In this article it states that “Native perspectives are especially important to include when teaching the history of the "First Thanksgiving". Giving thanks is a longstanding and central tradition among most Native groups that is still practiced today. The First Thanksgiving is often portrayed as a friendly harvest festival where Pilgrims and generic, nameless "Indians" came together to eat and give thanks. In reality, the assembly of the Wampanoag Peoples and the English settlers in 1621 had much more to do with political alliances, diplomacy, and a pursuit of peace.” This excerpt alone shows the lack of knowledge from today's society about the Origins of this nationally beloved holiday where the concept of it is misconstrued into something friendly when in reality that was not the case. This Education would be relevant to Alfred State students, and students all over the world because It would help to bridge the gap between current day Indigenous peoples, and people who occupy indigenous land without even knowing how or why that came to be and how Indigenous people lost almost 99% of their land to the United States Unwillingly.

WORK CITED

Native knowledge 360°-rethinking Thanksgiving celebrations: Native Perspectives on Thanksgiving. Especially, President Mauro, because if he was not here it would be kind of awkward. On a serious note, it is an honor to serve you as the Student Senate President and to stand here in front of an extremely hardworking and talented faculty, staff, administration, delegates, and the student body.

Nineteen months ago, you can say I felt like Nemo in the movie Finding Nemo, who wandered seamlessly to find a new cultural identity. My journey has emulated the same one Nemo encountered, we both persevered throughout life's ups and downs. My journey has led me to be the voice for Alfred State’s student body – a student body filled with talent, intelligence, and courage. But how did I find this voice? It wasn’t just doing well in academics or the late-night runs into town to get deep fried Oreos from Checkpoint! It was through the environment Alfred State continues to provide for their students, with the quality of education, dedicated faculty and administration and the colorful fall leaves.

The first time I met President Mauro, was not after he was chosen as the 13th President, but it was during the open student forums when presidential candidates came to visit our beautiful campus. The only forum I had attended last Fall was President Mauro’s where we sat right in the middle of the Student Leadership Center. Fast forward, President Mauro is someone we all see in those Alfred State Instagram videos all across campus working passionately for the growth of our community.

Having been here for less than seven months, President Mauro has taken strides of leadership and community development for Alfred State students. He has continued to foster this surrounding where we can not only dream but also achieve those very dreams. I am excited to see new programs and watch several other initiatives grow and expand these upcoming years.

Alfred State provides an environment of inclusion and belonging, something I have strived for eighteen years to find - and here I am eight-thousand miles and several oceans away from my home finding my place in Alfred State.

We have the ability to operate in a diverse and interdependent world full of ideas and innovations. And, as we forge ahead into a year filled with many unknowns and ideas of what we hope to accomplish, I want us all to remember that at the end of it all, we gave our best as Pioneers do!

All we have to do is hit the ground running.

Fellow Pioneers, I hope you have a wonderful rest of the semester! Thank you.

Tor Echohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18366422935236678562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2461521787153055244.post-61611537531904522722022-04-19T11:33:00.004-04:002022-04-19T11:33:21.616-04:00Poetry Reading Personal Review
Written by Miranda Fuentes

When attending a poetry reading event, the experience is completely separate from one’s expectations. I certainly had not expected the atmosphere to resonate within me as it did: the calm lighting, the silence of the attendees and the loudness of their focus, and the poets themselves. They had certainly opened themselves up to the audience, not only through their poetry, but the way they had dealt with dozens of eyes on them. Some played off nervousness with humor while others masked it with confidence. There were few who did not hide their shyness at all. Getting a sense of the poet’s personality can play a part in a poem’s effect when read by said poet.
Sometimes the poems do not reflect your expectations about a person. You could be surprised about the dark things a cheery person could write about and vice versa. As previously mentioned, what you experience is separate from what you expect. Although I had not been given the opportunity to read a poem of my own, I had no qualms about being a spectator. There was a comforting feeling in just letting go of my own thoughts and purely listening to works I had never read before. I found it fascinating how the staff and students could find poems in many places, whether from their own creativity, a person they admire, or even video games. Yes, one of the poems read was from a video game called “Night in the Woods”. As a student in the game design department, I was very familiar with the reference, so it really stuck with me. It shows that people can find things in common with one another at these readings. I had not seen a single familiar face at the event, but it still felt refreshing to be surrounded by strangers. The limitless potential of who you’re going to meet is quite exciting.

Tor Echohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18366422935236678562noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2461521787153055244.post-46267942281858727862022-04-17T03:33:00.001-04:002022-04-17T03:33:29.974-04:00Campus Wind Turbine and Other Sustainable Activities
Written by Amanda Damon

Campus Wind Turbine-

Many Alfred State students may not have noticed the wind turbine located at the top of campus. Installed in 2013, this 100-kilowatt grid-tied wind turbine was an effort to increase green, sustainable energy and decrease power costs for the campus. Recently, however, the turbine has been turned off. There should
normally be systems in place to keep it from producing too much stray voltage, though an issue with the systems created a flood of power, causing the connected breaker to trip. This caused two campus-wide power outages, prompting the school to turn the turbine off until it can be fixed. Power Grid Partners is scheduled to check the faulty power sources. This wind turbine is an effective sustainable energy source as it offsets the costs of powering the sports fields and other parts of campus. Originally paid for by the institution and grants, the wind turbine is an effective source of renewable energy and will soon be up and running once more.

Photo provided by Joseph Greenthal

Sustainable Efforts on Campus-

Efforts to move toward increased sustainability and renewable energy resources are on the minds of top Alfred State officers. In an article posted to the Alfred State website upon installation of the wind turbine, a Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) was cited. While this position no longer exists at Alfred State, there are continuing sustainability efforts happening around the campus. Joseph Greenthal, Chief Financial Officer for Alfred State, has taken the lead for many of these projects, as a balance between costs and savings needs to be determined before implementation. In 2017, a full-scale Energy Master Plan with $8.5 million worth of projects was created. Consisting of three phases, the first of which was finished in 2019, this plan took a broad look at all of the inefficiencies around campus and looked for ways to improve, by implementing green initiatives. This EMP has the potential to create $500,000 worth of energy savings annually. While CSO is no longer a position at Alfred State, the school is exploring the idea of having one person in charge of these types of efforts for five or so nearby campuses.

Building Roof Efficiency-

A large focus for the campus right now is replacing the roofing on all of the buildings to update them and keep them as heat efficient as possible. The roofing needs to meet certain ratings and energy costs and recent thermal imaging has shown that some buildings are not currently heat-efficient. This is especially true for the Agriculture Science building, which will have work done soon to increase the heat efficiency and insulation capabilities. The building is currently drawing much more energy than is needed. Along with this building, Parish, PHS, CDH, and the Administration building will have their roofs and insulation replaced and upgraded.

Heating and Air Control-

Another project that is currently underway is the replacement of the boilers for the building around campus. The new boilers have high efficiency and lose much less heat than the old ones. More control for the new boiler system means that they are now 95-99% efficient. The kitchens in CDH are also getting updates with their variable frequency drives, which are devices used to control an electric motor. The drives now have sensors for heat, giving them the ability to turn on and off as they sense a need rather than being kept on constantly. The gym in Orvis will also have sensors to give more control to the air handler units that have regulated and circulated air. CO sensors now give the school better control over the air in the gym, which has been an especially important concern since Covid-19. This focus on more system controls is estimated to provide Alfred State with about $93,000 in annual savings.

The HVAC systems around campus are being monitored for better control and servicing. The HVAC system in the Pioneer Center is not enough for the eatery that is being planned to move into the downstairs space. When this system is replaced and updated, the Pizza Pioneer eatery will be able to begin to be moved into this space.

Infrastructure Changes-

There are infrastructure changes coming to campus along with sustainability changes. The main loop road will be replaced over the next three summers, widening the road and replacing the curbs. The current water lines will be changed, and another water tower and treatment center will be added. The water is very hard, so it has been eroding the water lines that are in place now. There have been several water main breaks over the past few years with increasing frequency, and 60,000 gallons of water are lost per day each time. Replacing the water lines will increase efficiency and eliminate continual breaks.

Solar Energy-

There are investigations into implementing a 2–4-megawatt solar field in Wellsville. While not cost-effective for the main campus, this may be a sustainable energy alternative for the Wellsville campus. The campus is utilizing geothermal energy as well, as there are geothermal systems under the parking lot of SLC and under the basketball courts to offset the energy usage of the SLC and PHS.

Switch to LED-

Other continuing actions around campus include changing the building lights to LED bulbs. Just by replacing the streetlights around the loop, the campus was able to save an annual $16,000.

While these projects are initially expensive, they reduce the school’s carbon footprint and eventually lower the roughly $4million annual utility costs. These savings will eventually get passed on to students. Gas and electric costs are getting reduced and reallocated, with the savings going to support new programs across the campus.
Tor Echohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18366422935236678562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2461521787153055244.post-40506441707031549712022-04-13T12:52:00.001-04:002022-04-13T12:52:31.177-04:00Hot Dog Day Relaunch 2022Written by Amanda Damon

Hot Dog Day has been an Alfred tradition since 1972 and is typically held at the end of April. It was founded by two Alfred University Students, Mark O'Meara and Eric Vaughn, in an effort to bring together Alfred University, Alfred State College, and the village of Alfred itself. This event has always been a way to raise money for charities, such as the local ambulance company and the local library. The money raised from vendor fees and T-shirt sales is distributed among chosen charities and nonprofits. This event has typically raised between $10,000 to $16,000 split between 6 or 7 charities. There are often many events, including a parade on Main Street, a vendor fair, and a concert.

In 2014, the decision was made to hold Hot Dog Day on the Alfred University and Alfred State campuses, alternating hosts each year, rather than holding the event on Main Street. This tradition held until the Covid pandemic caused the cancellation of many events in 2020 and continuing into 2021. In lieu of Hot Dog Day, Alfred State held a small festival in the spring of 2021.

As this year will mark the 50th anniversary of Hot Dog Day, it was important for both the colleges and the village to plan something to celebrate, especially since Covid caused the cancellation of the festival for the previous two years. Everyone involved in the lengthy planning of Hot Dog Day wants to preserve the legacy of the event. There was always a commitment to put on a large fair of some kind this spring for the students. Splitting the event into Hot Dog Day on the University campus and in town and the Spring Carnival on the State campus was deemed the best option for this year. There are plans to bring the event back to its history of being held on Main Street rather than alternating campuses, but these plans are dependent on the pandemic status as time goes on. Collaboration between Alfred University, Alfred State College, and the village will continue to ensure that events are planned that serve students in the best possible way.

This year, Alfred University will be hosting vendors on their campus on April 30th. There will also be a parade down Main Street at noon. Alfred State College will be holding a Spring Carnival to complement the Hot Dog Day activities, an event that will include carnival rides and food trucks. These events will be held outdoors to keep students attending as safe as possible.

Other Alfred State College activities taking place on this year’s Hot Dog Day weekend include the Special Olympics on Friday, April 29th. Along with the Spring Carnival on Saturday, April 30th, there will be doubleheaders in both baseball and softball. While scaled-down, there will still be fundraising by Greek houses for their existing philanthropies. Whether it has been good or bad, we could all agree, that we have put it aside for the importance of Black History Month. We used this month to celebrate iconic African Americans and their impact on the world. Two examples are Barack Obama, as he was the first African American president of the U.S., and the famous Martin Luther King Jr, who was known for making strides towards equality for all of humanity. Although we may not make as big of an impact as these two men did, we still celebrate the demanding work that they have done. Alfred State has hosted a “Student of Color Leadership Conference.” The importance of this is that while it was open to any student of Alfred State, speakers of color came to network and got to know the students which showed a sense of unity during Black History Month. Next, was a “Freedom Banquet” in which everyone got together to have a meal which was important to the month because it gave us a chance to connect with each other and celebrate the month that Barack Obama and Martin Luther King Jr fought for us to have. Lastly, the Caribbean Student Association, a club here at Alfred State, is actively participating in Black History Month. CSA President Brian Blemur, in an interview with me, stated that “The Point of CSA is to spread awareness about the Caribbean culture.” I agree with Brian’s statement about spreading awareness and that he is doing the right thing for CSA. A key event Brian mentioned that was also held was a viewing of “Selma” with MLK. Brian says that it has “opened his eyes to the history” that African Americans have faced. With all the events that have taken place here at Alfred State, it can be said that the community tried to show passion regarding Black History Month.

Tor Echohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18366422935236678562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2461521787153055244.post-12056401493604097332022-03-15T11:38:00.002-04:002022-03-22T11:49:44.771-04:00Nothing Ever Lasts Forever - A solo exhibition by Jeremy M. Beginning at an early age, he practiced his drawing, starting with all the fun things a little boy can imagine and eventually incorporating the real world to “express ideas in a more “poetic” fashion.” Turning a childhood passion into a career, Professor Pelt became an art teacher at a summer camp in college and fell in love with teaching. In 2009, he began teaching college art classes. After taking a break from teaching to paint murals in Chicago for a few years, Professor Pelt began to miss his former career and started to look for another teaching job. This brought him to Alfred State, where he was “happily surprised to find that they incorporate a Fine Art background into their Foundations for the Digital Media and Animation department.” He began teaching here in the Fall 2021 semester. Professor Pelt does not separate being an artist and being an art teacher, so his position here allows him to do what he loves every day while also helping to inspire the next generation of artists.

<span class="TextRun SCXW109520958 BCX9" data-contrast="none" lang="EN-US" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; -webkit-user-drag: none; font-family: "Times New Roman", "Times New Roman_EmbeddedFont", "Times New Roman_MSFontService", serif; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: 18.3458px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; user-select: text;" xml:lang="EN-US">

Tor Echohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18366422935236678562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2461521787153055244.post-34283906017042961872022-02-08T11:18:00.005-05:002022-02-08T11:18:55.175-05:00Honors Convocation – Sunday, April 18, 2021 – 4 p.m.
<span style="color: #201f1e; font-family: "Segoe UI", system-ui, "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", sans-serif; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; text-decoration-line: inherit;">Congratulations<span style="color: #201f1e; font-family: "Segoe UI", system-ui, "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", sans-serif; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;"> to all those students on their academic achievements!
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: "Segoe UI", system-ui, "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", sans-serif;">

This ban on string lights currently includes all plug-in and battery-operated lighting. Conversations around an amendment to this ban have been taking place for the last year. Though Alfred State currently bans all types of string lights, other SUNY institutions allow battery-operated LED string lights in dorms as they are a safer alternative to traditional Christmas lights. Since this ban is clearly not a SUNY ruling, students are asking that school leadership review and amend the current ruling.

As a result of continued efforts to enact changes to Alfred State’s ban on all string lights, the issue was brought to the school’s Housing Committee. On September 16th, the issue of the ban on decorative lighting, specifically LED lights that are battery powered, was brought up during the Housing Committee meeting.

There is widespread support for the modification of previous school rules to allow for battery-operated LED string lights, though there is still a long process before the change is fully implemented. Despite the long road ahead, the support and movement so far are great first steps to change. In emailing Matt Ryan, Senior Director of Residential Services, Mr. Ryan said after the Housing Committee meeting that “there is administrative support for battery-operated LED, and we will commence with the vetting and approval process or something similar.”

The next steps include figuring out a way to ensure that students are using appropriate lighting rather than string lights that present a safety hazard. Though there was a concern raised about the inconvenience to residential staff in monitoring this, several RAs in a Campus Round Table meeting last year stated that it would add little to no extra work for them. With the support of students, RAs, and other campus staff, the issue is on its way to a resolution.

Allowing only battery-operated LED lights in student rooms and suites would encourage decorative freedoms while keeping students safe, as battery-operated string lights are much safer than their plug-in counterparts. Students have been voicing their desire for a change to this ban and it is time the school listened to the students, meeting them halfway to support creativity as well as safety.

Tor Echohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18366422935236678562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2461521787153055244.post-83433244450860226442021-10-21T14:13:00.002-04:002021-11-11T14:41:16.444-05:00Ergo Poetry Reading is Coming Again!

<span face=""Calibri",sans-serif" style="background: white; color: #201f1e; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: JA;">Alfred State's literary

campus, there have been concerns raised by pet owners about the lack of
available space to wash their dogs. Many need to seek an off-campus groomer or
wash their dogs themselves in shared dorm bathrooms. This can lead to issues
with roommates or suitemates, especially since the pet-friendly dorm is now
being used as a quarantine building. Some students have begun to ask if Alfred
State could implement a shared bath space for dog owners to use. In the search
for answers to this question, Tor Echo President Kimberly Wick spoke with Professor
Bliss. Professor Bliss has been teaching Vet Tech classes at Alfred State for
20 years and has been the advisor for the Opt-To-Adopt club since she began
teaching here.

Professor Bliss raised potential
problems for putting this idea into action, as a grooming area for animals
would need to be enclosed to be safe. Potential issues include finding someone
to perform upkeep, providing signup times, inserting plumbing and drains,
securing a space, having someone to monitor the space when it is in use,
providing towels and/or dryers, and paying for water and heat. She suggested
that the R/C residence hall would be the best place for a dog wash area as that
is the designated pet-friendly dorm. This space would need to be renovated but
could be monitored by the RAs of the building. Maintenance costs could be
covered by extra fees for the residents of R/C, as they are the ones who would
be utilizing the space.

Even though Alfred State does allow
pets in certain circumstances, students should be aware of the potential
adverse effects of keeping a pet in a dorm room. Service and emotional support
animals can be an important asset but keeping an animal for the sake of
companionship alone may not be great in a dorm living situation. Animals,
especially dogs, need a lot of space to be happy and healthy, so being cooped
up in a dorm room may be doing more harm than good. Before bringing a pet on
campus, consider if it will be the best situation for the animal and for the other
people in that dorm or residence hall.

Tor Echohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18366422935236678562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2461521787153055244.post-41603984012058383292021-04-29T19:09:00.002-04:002021-09-23T15:42:43.688-04:00Because Survival is Insufficient

Written by Zachary Butler

On Thursday, April 16th at 7:00 in the Anthony Cappadonia memorial auditorium, the lights dimmed, and “Grease Lightning” faded into the opening scene of Almost, Maine, produced by the Alfred State Drama Club.

A play in the pandemic may sound like a challenging proposition, beyond the mechanics of a COVID compliant production, shouldn’t we be reduced to only essential activities? The Drama Club did an indisputably thorough job managing concerns. The play consisted of a series of 2 people per scene with a socially distanced audience. This production transported the audience and actors away to unincorporated Maine in a recent time which now feels like a memory. It grappled with the idea of modernity in a small town, which likely resonates with much of the student body. The performers did a really great job making the scene tangible and expressing the idea that who one chooses to love is a choice each person must make, and we must respect each other’s choices, there is no other way.

“Wait? The portrayal of Phil (Ralf Jean-Franscois) and Marci (Grace Musingo) does not back down from this reality. Tuesday, March 30th, New York lawmakers approved a bill that
legalizes recreational marijuana for adults 21 and over. As of right now, using
marijuana recreationally is legal, and people in NY are allowed to have up to
three ounces of cannabis, or 24 grams of concentrated cannabis oils. As soon as
regulations are put in place, the sale of marijuana will be legalized as well.

While
smoking cannabis is legal in places where tobacco smoke is allowed, the drug is
still not permitted on school grounds. All accredited schools, state and
private, will treat marijuana usage as a violation of their code of conduct.
Usage and possession will remain in violation of this code. Students living on
campus will not be allowed to have marijuana and RA’s can write incident
reports for any students caught with the drug. These rules extend to students
travelling on school-affiliated field trips, as school rules still apply in
these situations. While school rules do not apply to students living in
off-campus residences, marijuana will not be permitted on school ground, in
classrooms, or in dorms.

Tor Echohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18366422935236678562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2461521787153055244.post-49942433500636547402021-04-29T18:21:00.001-04:002021-09-23T15:43:54.107-04:00A Farewell to President "Skip" Sullivan
By Amanda Damon

In a recent interview with Tor
Echo, Alfred State President Skip Sullivan discussed his upcoming retirement,
plans for his future, and the hopes he has for the future of Alfred State.

President Sullivan came to this
position over 7 years ago when he was headhunted by a search firm. At the time he
had been the president of a 2-year commuter institution in Atlanta, Georgia.
While not initially sold on the position here, President Sullivan ended up
taking it because he liked the idea of a residential campus with 2- and 4-year
programs featuring hands-on education. This provided an opportunity to have
more connections with students and watch them grow and graduate, which has been
one of the aspects that President
Sullivan has appreciated most during his time here.

President Sullivan has taken full
advantage of the opportunity to really connect with students.
He frequently walks around campus and always stops to have a chat with those around him. As a fun, down-to-earth guy, he encourages those around him
to call him Skip and has made tremendous efforts to engage with students,
faculty, clubs, and sports. Though Skip has made efforts to support as many extracurricular activities as
possible, he has particularly enjoyed attending sports events and poetry
readings.

As for what comes next, Skip is
moving back to Mobile, Alabama,
where he grew up. He still has family in that area and is looking forward to
reconnecting with them. Though he is retiring from presidency, Skip is a
tenured faculty member and will be teaching psychology online. Skip stated that
he is looking forward to slowing down. Having worked his way through college
and through several positions after that, he is looking forward to being able
to enjoy the rewards of his many years of hard work.

President Sullivan hopes for
“continued program development, continued enrollment, continued support for
scholarship funds and that Alfred State is allowed to really keep their focus
on the students and their successes”. He hopes that programs will be flexible
as technologies change and that the focus remains on attracting students and
developing graduates who are ready to transition into the workplace. He has
tried to be a good steward of resources and suggests that those in power after
him keep an attitude of service to better help the students and the college
itself. He hopes the next president is
very 'student focused' and is willing to engage with students. Skip keeps in
touch with students from throughout his over 7 years here and would love to see
a similar level of engagement from his successor. He wants the legacy of Alfred
State to continue and employers to continue to value and seek out Alfred State
graduates.

The impact that Skip has had on Alfred
State is clear. He is leaving Alfred State in a very strong financial position.
The college has high graduation and retention rates. The programs here are
highly ranked, and employment opportunities continue to expand through the
creation of new programs. There have been very successful alumni fundraising
events and the money raised continues to support the creation of scholarships. Skip is confident that he
leaves the school in a great position.

Greek life at Alfred State College
is a network for students to connect with organizations best suited for fostering
their personal development and aspirations that will last a lifetime. Despite
the various misconceptions about Greeks, joining Greek life is an opportunity for
students to become campus leaders and grow as individuals. Joining Greek life
unlocks new opportunities for on-campus and off-campus engagement. Greeks at
Alfred State has taken on countless initiatives that promote various causes
that are important to them in the form of different philanthropies.

The Greek Senate is constantly
creating events and initiatives that reflect the best interests of the Greek

Diversity Chairman, illuminating the Greek Community’s forward-thinking and
devotion to diversity and inclusion. The Greek Community gives back to the
community of Alfred through various community service events on campus and off, such as town cleanups, Canned food drives, etc. Greeks proudly serve as role
models on campus for Scholarship, Community, Philanthropy, and for maintaining friendly
and respectful connections with other campus organizations. Greeks at Alfred
State are hardworking and devoted students that aim for success in their fields
of study, for the community, and to the houses in which they have pledged.

Greek Organization that is founded on values of Unity, Trust, and
Tradition. The members of this
organization view themselves not as individuals but rather as one unit, one
heart, one organization that works together towards common personal and
organizational goals. The trust that we have developed with one another has
allowed us to have faith that we will cover each other’s blind spots and bring out
the best in one another. The traditions that we hold as our compass, remind us
of the organization we love and why we wear these letters in the first place.
The best part about Kappa is the fact that no brother is exactly the same. We
acknowledge that each and every one of us is different in our experiences and
perspectives and we use those diverse perspectives and differences to enhance
our organization and the overall climate of the organization. Diversity plays
an essential role in Kappa because we believe that diversity is an asset and
furthermore the key to staying competitive in an institution where we are often
encouraged to unite with other students to establish meaningful connections,
and that’s what we’ve done here. In this
organization, the word “brother” goes beyond a blood bond; it is a commitment to
stay unified in our effects to protect our Organization and one another.

Our two philanthropies—Teach Impact Empower and
LUNGevity—has the potential to shape the experience of students preparing for
their post-graduate careers and change the lives of those battling lung cancer

Jerome Thomas, as a way to promote community outreach and designed to “teach
individuals the importance of taking charge of their actions in order to
positively impact their future, while empowering them to be optimistic and to
create habits that will ensure success.” Our goal through T.I.E. we aim to prepare students for their post-graduate careers by helping them to
create or improve resumes and by
providing professional attire. We have also been working on various seminars to
teach young individuals the importance of professionalism. Through our
philanthropy LUNGevity, we raise money for a worldwide campaign against lung
cancer and, more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the challenges that have arisen from
the worldwide pandemic this semester, Kappa Sigma Epsilon is devoted now more
than ever, to support members of the college and community at large.

Tor Echohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18366422935236678562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2461521787153055244.post-23411689471192034392020-11-09T16:45:00.002-05:002021-09-23T15:44:18.726-04:00 Ban on string lights in dorms- a necessary safety precaution or overkill?

By Amanda Damon

Like many colleges, Alfred State doesn’t allow certain items in dorm rooms. In accordance with strict safety precautions, items like guns, knives, and space heaters are banned. While these items make sense to ban, the ruling against string lights is less understandable. In Alfred’s Guide to Moving and Packing,
“Christmas/holiday lights and strip lighting” are listed under what NOT to bring. The college stresses the fire hazard that plug-in lights present. While there is some evidence to support string lights being a fire concern, LED lights are far safer as they emit much less heat. Despite this, and the fact that battery operated lights are also safe, all string/strip lights are banned in Alfred State dorms.

In a Tor Echo interview with Matthew Ryan, Senior Director of Residential Services, potential changes to this ban were discussed. Mr. Ryan stated that he did not have the final say in whether string lights could be allowed in dorms, and he voiced some support for an amendment to this ban that would allow battery operated lights. Any potential changes would hinge on guidelines being submitted to the Campus Round Table for discussion.

Instead of continuing to blame the ban on fire marshal rulings and trying to catch all the students who sneak in lights, Alfred State could work with the students’ wants and meet in the middle. Creating guidelines for safety while still allowing certain lights (either LED, battery operated, or both) would not be difficult for the school. Making these allowances would save time and energy of RA’s, despite Mr. Ryan’s belief that stipulations would increase the amount of time RA’s spend checking rooms. The RA’s would not have to keep trying to find and confiscate lights; they would instead be able to check for proper connections much like they do with fridges now.

There aren’t many stories about fires starting in dorms because of string lights, and if they were truly a problem, then more colleges would ban them. As it stands now, string lights are a very popular dorm decoration, with many stores and brands marketing these types of lights specifically to college students. As a student at Elon University states, ““If residents are abusing [string lights] or causing some sort of a problem because of them, then the RA should interfere, but other than that, I think there are more pressing matters at hand that [Residence Life] should be a little more concerned about.”

School Policies:

Geneseo allows battery operated lights, not plug in.

Wake Forest University’s housing policies do not specifically prohibit string lights.

Davidson College’s housing policies allow the lights with some guidelines: “Holiday lights should not be strung through suspended ceiling tiles or near fire suppression sprinkler heads and should not come into contact with any wrapping paper, metallic foil, etc. Decorative lights must be turned off and unplugged when no one is in the room.”

Alfred State does not allow Christmas/holiday lights and strip lighting

Niagara University allows string lights in dorms with certain requirements; however, according to a student there, little attention is paid to them as there are more pressing matters for Res Life to attend to

Potential Guidelines:

Plug-in Lights-

Alfred State could allow string lights if they are kept above a certain height. Mr. Ryan cited a past incident where a student kept the lights under the bed. The student’s bedframe/posts had rubbed against the wires of the lights, exposing raw wires and sending an electric charge through the bed, heater, and window. Keeping the lights at a height higher than that of the beds at the highest setting would avoid damage from any of the furniture in the rooms. As this involved the window too, there could be a ruling on having lights plugged into the outlets farthest away from the windows.

Alfred could easily make similar amendments to the current rules to follow a policy like Davidson College. Stating that lights are allowed if they are not hung from the ceiling or sprinkler head, and as long as they do not come in contact with paper or metal. These rules could be easily checked by RA’s during the standard room checks. A concern of Mr. Ryan’s was that allowing lights with certain stipulations would create an increase in room checks, but this doesn’t have to be the case. Many students really want lights and are willing to sneak them in and try to avoid getting caught. If these lights were allowed, even with safety guidelines, I believe that students would follow them.

Battery Operated Lights-

Battery operated lights are a safe option as they don’t provide the hazard of plugging into an outlet. Other colleges allow these types of lights while banning plug-in lights. Alfred could easily reword their list to allow battery operated lights while still not allowing Christmas/strip lights. These are the safest option of string lighting, especially if they are LED as well as battery operated.

Tor Echohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18366422935236678562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2461521787153055244.post-67929227392901315462020-11-03T08:14:00.004-05:002021-09-23T15:44:32.489-04:00Protests Against In-Person Classes on Campus

By Amanda Damon

With a pandemic still threatening public health, schools had to figure out a way to get students an education while still maintaining social safety guidelines. Alfred State chose to use the Hyflex remote system with hover cams, allowing professors to teach from home while students remain in class.
This practice has been controversial, though, as some students feel that the school is still putting their health at risk. A protest has begun on campus, calling out the school for forcing students to physically be in classrooms. Starting on the 29th of September, student Brad Pensgen, along with other protesters, have been calling for change outside of the Central Dining Hall. They plan to continue to protest until they see changes. These students have created an online petition, hoping to get enough signatures for Alfred State to take notice. While students who are dorming on campus may not feel as worried about catching the virus, Mr. Pensgen commutes and worries about bringing COVID-19 home to his elderly father. These protesters want Alfred State to further limit social interaction, even to the point of completely closing campus and switching to online classes. The numbers of COVID cases are far lower in colleges that have moved to online learning compared to those that are still holding in person classes. While online learning isn’t the norm for Alfred State, all professors made the switch for the second half of last semester, proving this option to be feasible.

This issue also brings attention to the fact that some professors don’t agree with having physical classes, and others are staying home for their health and safety. Even though a number of students feel the same way, they aren’t all given the same option of staying at home while continuing their education. The school has been putting an emphasis on having students in the classrooms, having professors encourage students to come in to class rather than join online. Even with the rules that have been put in place, positive cases are still growing in number. Students feel that Alfred State is not putting the health of its student population first, creating this call for action.

Those interested in signing the petition can do so here: http://chng.it/TdwgHgXMsC

Tor Echohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18366422935236678562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2461521787153055244.post-5538856604005419762020-10-31T21:00:00.002-04:002021-09-23T15:44:39.657-04:00Ghost Stories Event
By Jacob Clark

On October 6th, 2020, the Alfred State Paranormal Investigation and Urban Exploration Club hosted a campfire stories event held on Microsoft Teams. This event was to tell stories about paranormal events, largely involving students on Alfred State’s campus. The Mackenzie complex is reputed to be the most haunted on this campus. While there were no experiences on campus shared at this event, some had stories to share from outside of campus.

The Alfred State Paranormal Investigation and Urban Exploration Club often takes trips to the Allegany County Poorhouse and this has multiple reports of paranormal events occurring. John Currie, the president of the club, shared a story from one of these trips. He went to the house last semester and had a depressed feeling while walking through the building, while other rooms made him feel pressure on his chest. This is where he had actually caught the voice of someone on recording. After this he had a spirit grab his heavy leather jacket and pull him back. After these events occurred, he had heard a click on the other side of the building when he went over to check it out it was a heavy deadbolt making this sound near the attic.

The club is hoping to host another event similar to this one in the future.
